“THE REPUBLIC IS WORTH SAVING”

(Jan. 10, 2020) — When rational thought prevails, irrational schemes crater. Such is the result of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s “hanging tough” against the juvenile antics of Shrieker of the House Nancy Pelosi. McConnell refused to dance the Pelosi Polka, causing her to fold like a tattered, rusty lawn chair. In a pitiful and humiliating attempt to paint her defeat as a quasi-victory, Pelosi issued a “Dear colleague” letter to House Democrats redefining and trying to rationalize her irrational tactic of holding off on sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate. The tactic was seemingly plagiarized from CNN guest contributor and Nixon/Watergate lawyer John Dean.
Moreover, she apparently did not consult with Harvard law professor Noah Feldman before telling her “colleagues” that the President “was impeached.” Feldman has argued that the President could legitimately argue that, because the articles were held but not transmitted, he had not been “impeached.” Pelosi seemed to believe that by “impeaching and shelving” the articles, President Trump could “never” be vindicated, but would be “forever impeached.” Seriously? As a wag once observed: “You cannot fix stupid.”
In her letter, Pelosi does linguistic cartwheels trying to disguise the flaming wreckage of her dumb tactic, deflecting the attention of her “colleagues” away from her humiliating defeat to a renewed faux expression of pride for the “courage and patriotism exhibited by our House Democratic [sic] Caucus as we support and defend the Constitution.” Lame. Really lame. And yes, Virginia, the “[sic]” appearing above reflects the reality that there is very little that can be deemed classically “democratic” in the cabal now running the House of Representatives.
As your faithful servant noted here, the time for playing games with the sober mechanisms of the Constitution is over. The Founders never in their wildest dreams would have contemplated that the device of impeachment would be wielded in such a malevolent, mendacious and despicable manner as has been accomplished by the Democrats in the House of Representatives.
Indeed, your faithful servant channeled several of the Founding Fathers last night – Madison, Hamilton and Jay, to name-drop but a few – and they were unified in their disgust over what has taken place. The manner in which Pelosi, Jerrold Nadler and Adam Schiff have morphed and metastasized impeachment from its intended function into the toxic, mono-partisan political weapon they have deployed against a president not of their liking is deplorable. What this troika of adolescent malcontents has done to the Constitution – aided and abetted, of course, by every single Democrat who voted in favor of the articles of impeachment – may never be repaired.
But we can try.
The first step is for Mitch McConnell to dispose of the articles as swiftly as possible. After all, the Democrats’ war-cry for the entirety of last December was that the issue demanded “urgent” action. The articles should be accorded the same “fair” treatment that was accorded by the troika to the Republicans and President Trump in the House. Stated otherwise: very little.
The second step is to avoid – as much as possible, given the President’s penchant for “tweeting” – the spectacle of gloating after either the articles are dismissed, with prejudice, or he is acquitted. Let the Democrats scream and wail that the Senate has betrayed the American people: the factual reality is that precisely the opposite will have occurred.
The Democrats have done structural damage to the mechanisms and processes of the Constitution, but gloating over a victory and pouring salt-infused vinegar into the wound they have created will only delay repairing the damage done. The Republic is worth saving. And revenge can be served up and savored in November…, if you get your faithful servant’s drift.
Third, and to the point of revenge, the electorate has a choice in November. Assuming that President Trump is re-elected – a pretty safe bet right now – if the Democrats are allowed to retain control of the House, get set for another four years of pitched battles between them and President Trump. And prepare for even more impeachments over more imaginary and concocted “high crimes and misdemeanors.” This is not a good recipe for moving the nation forward and returning the governance of the country to the adults in the room rather than leaving it to the kindergartners on the playground.
The other choice for the electorate, of course, is to change the ingredients in the recipe: remove from the ingredients in the recipe every… single… Democrat… now serving in the House of Representatives or the Senate up for re-election. The turmoil and polarization they have visited upon the country ever since their “Anointed One” – Hillary Rodham Clinton – tubed the 2016 general election will only get worse, and potentially much worse, if they are allowed to stay in control of the House. Again, they have proven beyond a shadow of doubt that they have forfeited any claim of right, ability or competence to govern a free people in a constitutional republic such as ours.
Accordingly, the remedy is to vote them out of office, replace them with Republicans and police the election so that illegal aliens won’t succeed in keeping them in the Congress. Oh, and as noted here, go read 18 U.S.C. § 611.
