(Nov. 5, 2024) — On this unusually warm day just after 9:01 a.m. EST, this writer arrived at her local polling place in Connecticut, the “Constitution State,” to cast a ballot in the 2024 general election.

There was a very short line which dissipated immediately and dispersed as voters completed ballots at various writing stations and slid them into an optical scanner at the back of the room near the exit.

The offices of U.S. president, a U.S. senator, district congressman, state representative and state senator, and a constitutional amendment question regarding making permanent “absentee ballot” voting were on the ballot.

Connecticut is one of the last states to authorize early in-person voting in 2022, in this case by a required constitutional amendment.

“Shall the constitution of the state be amended to permit the General Assembly to allow each voter to vote by absentee ballot?” the amendment question reads.

Because the state constitution requires that absentee ballots be utilized only in cases where voters qualify under a limited number of exceptions (excuses) to voting in-person on Election Day, “mail-in” voting is not the norm in the state. “Early voting,” now permitted 14 days prior to an election, must be done in-person at a voter’s polling place.

Proponents of the change, which would reportedly apply to all “eligible” voters, say it would “protect all citizens’ right to vote,” while critics maintain it would invite “even more fraud and misuse” than that which was reported in national headlines in the City of Bridgeport in 2019 and 2023.

Connecticut contributes seven electoral votes to the Electoral College, whose designees, which are different in every presidential election cycle, cast their votes in mid-December for the president in accordance with the popular vote of each state.

    “The system” is not broken, rather, the existing prescribed laws that define “the system” are being broken by rogue leaders in responsible charge of “their/our systems”!

    More morals, not more monies, will ensure leaders stay in their lanes of responsibility and not devolve to corruptions of their office, AND THIS BEGINS AND ENDS WITH EACH TASKED LEADER FOLLOWING THEIR OATHS OF OFFICE, or else, BE REMOVED BY We the People!

  4. My wife and I voted at about 1 p.m. here in Lehigh County PA. The system here was, fill in the ovals on paper ballots, with many provided tables and chairs to do it at, and then walk up to two optical scanners and insert it, and zip it is done! No long line, although the staff said there was a 20 minute waiting line when they first opened. I think paper ballots and optical scanners is the way to go.

    A couple election cycles ago our county was using the electronic machines with touch screens and those machines being expensive they never had enough of them. The thinking who to vote for being done while standing in front of a touch screen screen type of machine meant that there just were not enough of them when people took a long time at those machines deciding how to use them and who to vote for, especially if there was a question on the ballot.

    The current way it would be very inexpensive and simple to expand the throughput simply by adding a lot of tables with the simple inexpensive cardboard privacy dividers, or wider table spacing, and the voter can take all the time they want while filling out their paper ballot and not delay others as occurred with the touch screen machines. The paper ballots and optical scanners is the way to go.

    Now all we need to do is get it that way nationwide, with one election day voting only or at most one weekend and the Monday before election day for early voting, with picture voter ID required, and citizens only voting, and no unsolicited mass mailed postal ballots. Absentee ballots with a valid reason such as being in a travel status or overseas like for our military, etc., like it used to be for those who could not be in their home district on election day.

    Our broken untrusted election systems that are being used now in many states can be fixed!

    Florida is a great example of how it can and should be done. It’s a large state and they have their voting results and a decision before midnight on election day. That is the way it should be nationwide. All it takes is the political will to do it.

    Hopefully if Trump wins big and with down ballot coat tails, swings the Senate to Repub and gets a stronger majority in the House, some major common sense legislation can be passed and signed into law for federal elections such as mandating Voter ID and only U.S. Citizens can vote. Picture ID’s are essential in many, many activities in our lives from banking to medical care to buying prescription drugs. It should be required to vote too. And just think about it and use common sense, I think it is racial and minority discrimination and disparagement of any group for the Dems to argue that minorities or older people or whomever cannot get a picture ID today.

    Maybe some changes will have to be made to that true identity law, or whatever it was called, that years ago required all driver’s licenses to be updated to provide better ID information for domestic airline travel, etc., should also be updated to require an easily seen image or mark on it denoting that they are a U.S. Citizen, just like they do to identify Veterans.

    With 20-30 million illegal aliens in the country, that issue potential voter fraud issue must be addressed. Non-citizens clearly should not be allowed to vote in a country they are not a legal citizen of. And especially, they cannot be allowed to vote in any federal elections.Action at the federal level is needed to address the voter ID and citizen ID requirements when voting in federal elections for sure,if not for all elections at all government levels.

    Hopefully by midnight tonight, the crisis facing our country with the chance of facing another four years of an ‘Obama controlled puppet‘, currently Biden and Obama hoped for with Harris, in the White House, will be over and Trump will have won with a landslide and mandate, with massive down ballot coat tails.
