(Sep. 18, 2021) — “Cathy’s Clown” (2:27)
“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to ‘The Pulse of the Nation,’ the place to hear it here first. Today’s guest is none other than one of the great judicial minds of our country, Justice Earl Warren. You say Warren is dead, but what if I were to tell you we’re at Madam Shylock’s Fortune-Telling Emporium located in Cassadaga, Florida, at a séance? What then?”
“I’m waiting.”
“Pardon me? Waiting for what?”
“Money; nothing happens without an exchange of something, and since I deal in money, then money is the currency in which, when you ask a question, I answer, but only if you pay me enough. And I need to remind you that séances are expensive.”
“Take a check?”
“You’ll never make it as a comedian, Roving, so keep your day job. Cash on the barrelhead. Thank you, and thank Sharon for me.”
“Consider it done. So you have Chief Justice Earl Warren on the phone, right?”
“Wrong; he speaks to me through my mind. He is in control of what I say.”
“Well, what does he say?”
“He says he apologizes for not taking out the garbage.”
“Isn’t that nice. Ask him about the the North Carolina judges who ruled that voter ID is racist.”
“He says calling people stupid is not polite and they shouldn’t do it.”
“So there’s nothing wrong in requiring voter ID?”
“He says in order to get his parking garage permit he had to show a picture ID.”
“Anything else?”
“He said he had to show his driver’s license – picture ID – to get his Supreme Court building pass.”
“Have any more?”
“Picture ID for a marriage license, hunting license and fishing license. He even said that he had to show a picture ID to get a rabies shot license for his dog. Want more?”
“No, no more. Ask him how he thinks the people feel being called stupid?”
“He says anyone who watches The View lacks self-esteem so they wouldn’t know enough to be offended.”
“Really? For real?”
“It’s the sign of the times, Roving. Consider it the result of public school/teacher union education coming home to roost: you get what you pay for.”
“But public school is expensive with property taxes going up every year,”
“So you don’t always get what you pay for.”
“Was that Warren or was it you?”
“It was me; he’s gone.”
“Gone where?”
“Back to being dead; what you think?”
“I think it’s time for us to say goodnight: Goodnight.
“Good show. Burger time: my treat.”
