“FRAGILE AS PORCELAIN”

(Dec. 24, 2016) — Frank Sinatra, Sr. recorded his last Christmas song twenty-five years ago, in August 1991, at the age of 75.
The song was ‘Silent Night.’
Mr. “S” hadn’t been in a recording studio for over three years according to liner notes to “The Christmas Collection,” a Sinatra family collaboration released in 2004.
Released in November, the 1991 ‘Silent Night’ was Sinatra Senior’s first released recording since 1984 – ‘L.A. Is My Lady.’
This offering was one of some two dozen selections on “The Christmas Album, a Gift of Hope.” Proceeds from sales went to benefit children’s hospitals nationwide. The Children’s Hospital Foundation based in San Diego, California issued the recording.
Frank’s son, Frank Sinatra, Jr. accompanied his dad on piano.
This father-son version is moving. It is an emotional outpouring. Daughter Nancy recalls: “It was an emotional day [in August 1991] because he was doing it for the children…He was not feeling good that day, and it was difficult for him to record. I hear the weakness and the frailty in his voice, and it so so sweet and tender that is is just heart-wrenching.”
Frank Sinatra, Sr. passed away on 14 May 1998 at the age of 82
Mr. Sid Mark, host of the local Sunday with Sinatra airing on 1210 AM WPHT out of Philadelphia and nationally syndicated Sounds of Sinatra, Sid Mark – the radio voice of Frank Sinatra – regularly introduces the 1991 father-son performance describing it “as fragile as porcelain.”
