Tuesday 3/17 was another very fruitful Lobby day in Albany. Five new cosponsors immediately upon request joined the growing ranks of Assemblymen who not only state their support but now display their support for FULL Repeal of the Safe Act. Yesterday also produced many more in the Assembly and some in the Senate to state they would also sign on to the respective bills. Along with that even others have now made statements they would vote YES on Safe Act Repeal.
The halls of Albany are quickly changing from chatter of “never happen” to “we believe it will.” We personally visited 32 legislator offices yesterday. Most of them were Democrats. Two – only two had conviction for the Safe Act. Out of the remaining 30 visited we estimate that at least ten will eventually have courage to cosponsor repeal bills [after they witness others signing on], and at least ten others say they will vote YES for repeal. The remaining ten say “I’m considering.”
Here’s the underbelly “whisper” that nonbelievers of FULL repeal need to know: There never was even close to a majority of support in Albany to enact the Safe Act – possibly 20% at best. In 2013 there was extreme pressure [such as Albany has never seen before] put upon every legislator to vote for the Safe Act. There is now fear of retribution if support for repeal is “visible” [that is the only hurdle WE have to get over]. At this point it is only “politics” that holds back a repeal total of 90% from those in Albany. Yes, if ALL legislators were to vote their heart and conscience, OUR vote for FULL Repeal would be as high as 90% in the Senate AND the Assembly! [OUR pressure MUST continue]
Here’s a statement for you: If YOU remain a repeal nonbeliever YOU either have not done any work on repeal or YOU have some “other agenda.” Ain’t politics strange?……. “Politics Creates Strange Bedfellows” also comes to mind.
Over two years ago WE began this trek together. Believing in each other kept US together. Now, two years later, WE REMAIN BELIEVERS – Don’t Quit – Don’t Back Down – Convince others to become BELIEVERS.
There are “code committees” in both the Senate and Assembly. These are the people who can demand votes to be taken. Out of the committee members, 21% are cosponsors/40% will vote yes for repeal/out of the remaining 39%, some have committed – some have not committed either way. WE want as many as possible to be Co-Sponsors of FULL Repeal. [Please Keep Pushing]
