(Sep. 22, 2026) — President Donald Trump has signed a trilateral compact with the leaders of Greenland and Denmark for the U.S. to provide security for Greenland for an indefinite period of time.
While brief, the agreement is one Trump has sought since his first term in office. On Friday, Trump announced on Truth Social that his “dream” would become a reality.
“…For over 100 years, Presidents have known the strategic importance of Greenland, but NONE of them were able to do anything about it,” Trump wrote in his declaration. “I am proud to be the President that permanently and conclusively addressed this very important situation. This is an ‘Infinite Life’ Agreement, there is no end! We are very honored and proud of what has just taken place, and everything agreed to today will be cherished by the American People. We will immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland, of which there are many. We will work with the people of Greenland in its development and construction. This solution is a great one for the United States of America, Denmark, Greenland, and all of our Allies. We look forward to working with the wonderful people of Denmark and Greenland toward a magnificent future with respect to this large, and highly strategic, parcel of land. We will be very protective of it! This is a dream come true for the United States of America, one that is very important, historic, and special.”
The event took place during a key week in New York City during which the United Nations General Assembly convenes for its 81st session, with approximately 130 countries represented.
Earlier Tuesday Trump addressed the assembly for just under 40 minutes.
“…It is my great honor to welcome the world to America as we celebrate 250 years of glorious freedom and independence. Two and a half centuries after the cause of liberty found its home on this continent, I can report to you with pride that America is back, and our country is stronger today than ever before,” he began after recognizing those in attendance.
He lauded the decline in violent crime in America’s major cities, the growth and strengthening of its military, the securing of the nation’s borders, and new investments “from all over the planet.”
“Two years ago our country was dead, and now we have the hottest country anywhere in the world,” he said.
He called out “the Islamic Republic of Iran” as a long-term menace and “#1 sponsor or terror.” “I do not believe in letting problems fester,” he said. “While others have ignored threats, I have confronted them…”
“…For 51 years, the fanatical Iranian regime has ruled with bloodshed and mass murder, spreading death and carnage and chaos across the entire Middle East and beyond. They were the bully of the Middle East, but they are the bully no more,” he said.
