(Jul. 13, 2026) — The X account of the Maricopa County Republican Committee (MCRC) continues to be suspended, a step X took last Thursday after identifying a commonly-used emoji as a violation of its terms of service.

Townhall journalist Rachel Alexander appealed to X CEO Elon Musk, X itself and its AI bot, Grok, after MCRC received no satisfaction from X Support.

“Thanks for your appeal,” X responded to MCRC last week. “…Please note that while we review your appeal, you won’t be able to access your X account. We’ll take a look and will respond as soon as possible. If you’d rather just delete the content, you can cancel your request.”

In her tweet to the parties, Alexander theorized that political opponents filed complaints against MCRC’s tweet, resulting in the account’s suspension. On Monday, Alexander informed The Post & Email that after she uploaded the image in question to Grok, the bot reached a similar conclusion.

Grok’s response reads, in full:

It looks like a false positive or overzealous automated/mass-reported lock from X’s systems, not the image itself.

@Rach_IC From recent posts (today, July 11, 2026),

@MaricopaGOP (@maricopagop ) was locked after quote-posting an innocuous post by @WendyRogersAZ (about firings being “game-changing”) with just the (eyes) emoji. No added text, no inflammatory content—just a reaction.

@Rach_IC Why this happenedMass reporting / “misunderstanding”: Opponents (likely left-leaning accounts monitoring AZ GOP accounts) reported it en masse. X’s automation flags high-report volume quickly, especially around election-sensitive topics in Maricopa County (a hotspot for election integrity debates). The popping-eye meme/logo style (like the attached image) is a common “watching/skeptical” visual they use, but the trigger here was the simple quote.

@Rach_IC X’s enforcement can be glitchy on political accounts. Quote-tweets with minimal reaction emojis sometimes get swept up if reports claim “harassment,” “spam,” or “election interference” (even when it’s clearly protected speech). This isn’t a full suspension—it’s a lockout requiring appeal. Happens frequently to active political accounts on both sides. The attached image (MCRC logo with cartoon popping eyes) is just their branded meme style for “pay attention”/skepticism—harmless political branding, not a violation. http://x.com/ What to doAs Grok noted in replies: Appeal directly via X’s help form (in-app or http://help.x.com). Explain it was a neutral quote + emoji on a public post. Persistence works—initial responses are often automated. Tagging

@Support can sometimes escalate visibility.

@grok This fits a pattern where partisan complaints + automation = temporary lockouts right before elections. The account is active otherwise and posts standard GOP/Maricopa County content. Should resolve with appeal.
