(Jun. 10, 2025) — Just to clarify; President Trump has deployed 700 Marines and activated the National Guard, sending them to LA to help control the rioting, property destruction and attacks on Law Enforcement Officers.
Leftists are decrying his intervention as illegal and an overreach of his authority, even saying he’s causing the violence. Predictable.
His authority to intervene is embodied in the Insurrection Act of 1807, which gives the President the authority to leverage Federal Troops to quell an Insurrection.
The Democrats lowered the bar to ground zero when they declared the January 6th, 2021 riot at the US Capitol an Insurrection even with the absence of weaponry with only modest destruction of property and then only lasting five hours. In contrast, these LA riots have lasted, closing in on one week, with weapons, hand-hurled bricks, concrete blocks, frozen water bottles, rocks, firecrackers, commercial fireworks, incendiary devices, baseball bats and more.
Additionally, this is not without precedent; Adams called in troops to address the Whiskey Rebellion 1794-1799, Grant sent Federal Troops into South Carolina to protect freed slaves in 1867 and 1870. Harding assigned 2200 Marines to guard mail trains in 1921 and Coolidge 2500 Marines in 1926.
Eisenhower activated the National Guard and deployed the 101st to Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957 to protect the “Little Rock Nine”; another Dem-led attempt to circumvent the Law. John F. Kennedy sent troops to University of Mississippi in 1962 to quell riots. LBJ approved activating the Guard in 1965 and ’67 in response to violence. In 1992, Bush 1 activated the Guard in LA to address the rioting over the Rodney King Riots. There are others, but these are the most notable.
So, the legitimacy of declaring an act or group as an Insurgency has now become a rhetorical tool of political convenience for the Deconstructionist Left. Hanging that charge around the necks of rioters and hapless protestors alike for 01062021 was not about them; it was about denigrating Trump even though he called for a peaceful assembly to demand a proper accounting of the vote.
In contrast, the current rioters are aiding and abetting illegal aliens who first, stormed and breached our sovereign border with Democrat help and blessing, many of whom have committed heinous acts since. Those rioters are not only guilty of Insurrection but Sedition as well, but Dem politicians effectively laud them as freedom fighters, even instigating the violence.
