A Dream of a Dream

(Feb. 10, 2024) — The princess silently stepped across the stardust-covered floor toward the wooden door, curious about the sound of the weaver’s loom on the other side. Slowly, she reached for the handle of the door and gently pushed it open. There, in the tower room, she saw a cloaked figure bent over their work. She watched in wonder as she saw one hand move, then another and then still a third. The fact that the being had three hands did not seem to trouble her, she was too fascinated by the tapestry that was taking form upon the loom.

The Weaver stopped as the princess stood before Their work and studied it. Tentatively, she reached out and, holding her hand aloft, inquired of the image seen, “Is that me?”

The Weaver nodded and went back to work. The princess watched in awe as He wove the tapestry of her life with His fingers. She tried to resist questioning a stitch or two. She shivered as her own fingers running across the threads found a snag, here and there. Soon, the work would be finished, and then she would see the beautiful masterpiece created with her in mind.

With a blink, the room was gone. The princess was standing in a meadow. In the distance, near the horizon, a luminescent form of a man came into view. The princess heard a gentle whisper in her ear, “Here is the path; follow it.” Her heart seemed to begin to beat for two. Had any being ever felt such joy?

Suddenly, the princess awoke. She sighed. A dream, that was all. But soon she’d find the magic of ordinary days, the gentle peace in sitting at and learning at the feet of a man so wise. Soon she would learn to treasure every “now”. She would learn to not beg for something that had already been promised to her, but, rather, open her hands with gratitude and receive, by faith, what had been prepared for her from the beginning of time. Through the darkness, in the midst of silence, she would discover that alone does not have to mean lonely; before she can feel the arms of her prince around her or hear his voice whisper her name, she could close her eyes and trust that she is already in his arms.
