Spread the love

(Apr. 21, 2023) — Through tear-filled eyes, the prince watched his friend step forth from his hiding place. How well he remembered when he first saw this ruddy shepherd boy standing before his father in the palace. The youth had displayed courage, wisdom and a confidence in God that was unsurpassed. The prince greatly admired these qualities. They drew his heart to this young man, perhaps all the more because he was reminded of his own zeal, years ago, when he showed the utmost courage in battle, believing that God was always on the side of right and that nothing was impossible for Him.

The prince was unable to wrap his mind around the reality that his father was, now, seeking to destroy this young man whom they had both welcomed into their home, with love, as one of their own family. The two friends ran to each other and gave a strong embrace. Together they wept for all that they were about to give up. The younger would have to run, literally, for his life, while the prince must return to his own obligations at the palace. Before their final parting, the two men of valor solemnly promised that their friendship would last forever, into their future generations.

The prince added, “Go in peace, for you will return, and you will take your rightful place as ruler.”

The shepherd nodded. “And I will then remember the promise we made here, today!”

Years passed. An aged warrior king sat on the edge of a boy’s bed with a smile. “Now, what story shall I tell you tonight?”

The child’s eyes shone with excitement. “Tell me, again, about my grandfather!”

The king’s expression grew grave. The painful loss of the friend of his youth still stung his heart. He let the light of the boy’s face melt his scowl into a smile. Playfully, he tousled the child’s brown curls. “He looked very much like you. He was the bravest warrior and the kindest man I have ever known!”
