(Jan. 5, 2023) — Late Wednesday evening, 45th President of the United States and 2024 presidential candidate Donald J. Trump wrote on his TruthSocial account that “good things are happening behind the scenes for the Republican Party” in the ongoing House floor debate over the next Speaker.

On Tuesday the 118th Congress assembled on Capitol Hill for the first time, but no official business has taken place in the U.S. House of Representatives due to the rule that a Speaker must be selected by majority vote in order to swear in returning and newly-elected members.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (CA23), who actively sought to become Speaker as the 2022 midterm election cycle unfolded, has failed to gain the necessary 218 votes in six rounds of balloting on Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Wednesday evening the House adjourned until noon today.

Through Wednesday, Trump had urged House Republicans to cast their votes for McCarthy in order to enable their agenda to move forward after winning a majority in November’s elections. “Republicans, do not turn a great triumph into a giant & embarrassing defeat,” he wrote in all capital letters. “It’s time to celebrate, you deserve it. Kevin McCarthy will do a good job, and maybe even a GREAT JOG – JUST WATCH!”

However, his post late Wednesday appeared to reflect progress in selecting a Speaker as early as Thursday.

In an interview Wednesday evening with Bret Baier, Rep. Chip Roy, who opposes McCarthy, said that “The American people didn’t send us up here to continue the status quo, so Kevin’s going to have to give us the ability to constrain the swamp…” but appeared to believe some “progress” had been made.

Trump’s “very good things” post was followed by one three hours later, at about 1:00 a.m. EST, in which he stated, “I actually think that a big Republican VICTORY today, after going through numerous Roll Calls that failed to produce a Speaker of the House, has made the position & process of getting to be Speaker BIGGER & MORE IMPORTANT than if it were done in the more traditional way, much like me again becoming President after having won big in 2016, gotten many Millions of MORE VOTES in 2020 but “supposedly” not winning (BIG LIE!), & then winning again in 2024. It will be BIGGER than the traditional way!”

On Fox & Friends Thursday morning, some opined that Trump’s endorsement of McCarthy, who had blamed Trump for the January 6, 2021 incursion at the U.S. Capitol, “backfired.”
