Inappropriate Virtue Signaling on our National Holiday — Ugh!

July 6, 2021

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Over the 4th of July several US sports teams played on national TV and some “players” disrespected our national anthem as it was aired prior their contests.  My question is what better country would these spoiled kids rather play for and live in?  Is our history so sordid that only shame and self-loathing are the appropriate feelings – on our shared national holiday?  And, if they do feel so strongly about our “imagined” sins, I’m certain there are air carriers that can take them from their self-imagined “tainted” shores to those bright bastions of freedom, prosperity and universal kumbaya!

Of course, we had warts, but we overcame all of them as times changed, and so did our more malignant attitudes – which by the way, any thinking person knows – those malignancies were near-universal at the times they were in vogue.  Why do the “star” athletes think it their duty to shame us on our national holiday?

Time and place and conditions.  Three important things to remember as they provide much-needed “context” before the grandstanding criticism, which in my view is nothing more than virtue signaling on stilts – “…Oh, my!  Just imagine the entire viewing audience not got to see what a virtuous and wonderful human being I am…”  It reeks!

Please stop this nonsensical theater.  Ours is a far better nation and we are a far better people than these poseurs pretend.

Old Frank

    Far too many current members of our National and Olympic Teams are in for themselves rather than for our country. IMHO, this is the result of the current generation of those members having been indoctrinated in our K-12 schools at best to not cherish America and at worst to hate America. This 4th of July was as proof positive of that as proof positive gets.

    On the flip-side is NASCAR’s Memorial Day Weekend race, the Coca-Cola 600 Miles of Remembrance at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Every racecar has the name of a military Fallen Hero across the top of the windshield. The sidewalls of every Goodyear race tire have “HONOR AND REMEMBER” where “EAGLE” normally is. Every racecar-hauler flies a 3′ x 5′ HONOR AND REMEMBER Flag. Several teams also fly a 3′ x 5′ HONOR AND REMEMBER Flag on their pit lane stands. All of FOX Sports broadcasters wear an HONOR AND REMEMBER/AMERICAN dual-flag lapel pin. At the end of the 2nd stage the racecars are led down pit lane, stopped half-way down pit lane, and shut off. The track announcer directs everyone’s attention to the 60′ x 100′ HONOR AND REMEMBER Flag being unfurled in the grassy area between pit lane and the racetrack, asks everyone to stand, remove their caps/hats, and observe 30-seconds of silence in remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. You could hear a pin drop on the grass.

  2. Dear Old Frank;

    Every time the NFL has a game on, I cast a ballot by not watching; same goes for baseball and basketball, and, it goes without saying, the Olympics. Used to watch, but this disrespecting the flag tends to make me have not-so-nice thoughts, and we can’t have that, now can we?

    And the glorious aspect of it all is that it is so easy to NOT WATCH CNN, MSNBC and FOX.

    And whenever there is a “Democratic Strategist (aka Commie)” on any program, I hit the O-F-F and feel good about myself.

    I rather like feeling good about myself so I guess I should thank Morning Joe for making me not watch him; same goes for the gang at The View and Rachael Maddow.
