(Apr. 19, 2021) — Jesus said we are to ask Him and He will give us living water (John 4:10). Most of us approach that promise as though we have a cup of water in our hand; small, finite, completely confined and controlled. We are satisfied to have Him provide our needs, our daily bread.
Our prayers, our worship, and our faith all tend to act as though we have God figured out and have Him in a little cup; as though we understand what He will and won’t do, or depending on our doctrines, even what He can and can’t do.
What if God was willing and able to be present as more than the living water in a cup. In your prayers do you expect that He will respond by turning on a faucet, so that your cup overflows and cannot contain all He is giving you?
What if God’s provision could be more like a fire hose, and out from your worship services or prayer meetings could flow an abundance of living water with a force that could push back the forces of darkness?
What if it is God’s desire that through the unity of the believers in a city, the living water that He could release would have the force of opening a spillway for a dam on a great river and so be able to completely wash away the strongholds oppressing a community?
Approach God expecting that He desires to do big things. Expect that He is just waiting for someone to ask and will in our time once again do something as unexpected as parting the Red Sea.
If in our prayers, our worship, and our faith, we act as though the supply that the Holy Spirit is able to bring is small, God will respond by keeping our little cup full.
However, the Holy Spirit, who dwells in each believer’s heart, is able to clearly communicate Father’s heart to you, if we sincerely seek to know His will. Then you can pray in accordance to the Father’s will and be confident that He will be pleased to give us all we ask for. (1 John 5:14-15)
Therefore, we can have confidence that God is able to respond to the earnest and urgent prayers of His people by opening for us streams of living water. Each of those flowing waters, the faucet, the fire hose and the spillway have the potential to be supplied through God’s provision, but they are not yet flowing.
God wants rivers of living water to flow out of us, His servants. We have access to each of those types of flowing water, but too often are content with having a cup.

A big “AMEN” to this article. RIVERS of living water are way better than just a dripping faucet.
