(May 4, 2018) — Bridgeport, CT – As a part of its Fourth Regional Plan, the Regional Plan Association (RPA) has identified the city of Bridgeport as one of nine Flagship Places, a distinction given to areas within the New York Metropolitan region that represent significant opportunities for growth while making strides towards a positive transformation in quality of life.

During the 28th Annual RPA Assembly on Friday, April 27th, featured headliners included U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, and Bridgeport’s very own Director of Planning Lynn Haig was also present serving as a panelist.  Ms. Haig was selected to speak on how the Office of Planning and Economic Development (OPED) is investing in Bridgeport to prepare for climate change, provide more housing affordability, and enhance quality of life.

“To be acknowledged in this way by the RPA is a significant accomplishment for Bridgeport and should not be overlooked,” said Director of OPED Tom Gill. “As a direct result, we have been able to initiate close collaborations with other Connecticut communities to figure out ways to best implement the association’s recommendations.”

“It is really exciting that Bridgeport is being recognized for the substantial work that OPED and the community has put in the last few years to improve the city,” said Mayor Ganim. “Those that live here know that Bridgeport is moving in the right direction and this is proof that others are seeing its limitless potential as well.”

Only the fourth of its kind released in the RPA’s history, the Regional Plan makes sweeping recommendations that are centered on the values of equity, health, sustainability, and shared prosperity. For Bridgeport, it envisions a city that is healthy and green. Specific projects that it recommends include an eco-industrial park, revitalization of South-End neighborhoods, and the continued development of waterfront access.
