WHAT ARE AMERICA’S CHILDREN LEARNING?

(Apr. 28) — “Daddy, why are the police hiding? Are they afraid?”
“Following orders, son, just following orders.”
“Daddy, look at those bad people breaking windows and burning those buildings and hurting people’s cars;, don’t they know that it’s wrong?”
“Oh, they know, son, they know.”
“Why don’t you stop them, Daddy?*”
“Because the police would arrest me, son, and put me in a cage that they call a jail.”
“But why?”
“Figure it this way, son: if they’re willing to turn their backs on their oath to protect the public, they’d certainly be willing to follow whatever orders they receive from the people who have control over their paychecks.”
“I learned in Sunday School that Judas took money to be a traitor to Jesus: is that what the police are? They just stand around and watch people riot, from city to city across the breadth of our Nation, isn’t that so?”
“I’m afraid so, son.”
“It’s hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys, Daddy.”
“That is so.”
“Then how?”
“I’ll tell you: you either recognize what you’re seeing or else you become one of them.”
“And who are they, Daddy?”
“The friend that lied to you, son, and he’s no longer a friend.”
“I’m frightened, Daddy.”
“You’re not the only one, son: you’re not alone.”
[*”Why don’t you stop them, Daddy?” The child has to yet comprehend the vast distances of hundreds or thousands of miles between the pictures on the television screen and where he’s sitting in the living room. To him it’s right in his face. Maybe if we looked at the stupidity of the attacks on our First Amendment we would feel the same.]
