“THE RIGHT STUFF”

(Apr. 10, 2017) — How many people get to meet one of their childhood idols and American heroes/icons?  I had the privilege and honor of meeting one of mine — John Glenn — at the former National Navy Medical Center Bethesda during one of mom’s appointment’s there.  I was pushing mom in a wheelchair through the Radiology Clinic waiting area when I spotted him sitting all by himself reading a magazine inconspicuously waiting his turn.  As I very slowly wheeled mom past him I bent down and softly said: “Thank you for your service Sir, and for having the right stuff.”  Looking up from the magazine he noticed my “Vietnam Veteran” cap, put the magazine down, stood up, reached his right hand out and said: “Thank YOU for YOUR service” as we shook hands.

Yesterday afternoon I went to Arlington National Cemetery to pay my respects to WWII & Korea fighter pilot ace, six-time Marine Distinguished Flying Cross awardee, Medal of Freedom awardee, and the first American to orbit the earth…John Herschel Glenn.  I printed “High Flight” in dark blue on specialty paper — light blue sky with clouds and an Eagle flying across the middle — I’ve had for over a decade, put it inside a clear vinyl sheet protector, and left it there.

His burial on Thursday was a very private ceremony…no press allowed.  He is buried inconspicuously in Section 35, Grave 1543…near the Amphitheater and Tomb of the Unknown.

Godspeed, John Glenn.

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, –and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of –Wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air…

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
