Washington, DC — The Tax Revolution Institute (TRI) — a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that promotes “justice and integrity in the tax system” — is pleased to announce the launch of the second annual Robert A. Heinlein Tax Revolution Scholarship competition.

As with the previous year’s contest announced at the 2016 International Students for Liberty Conference, TRI is inviting high-school seniors and college students to write an essay of 1,000 to 2,000 words on one of three prompts concerning America’s tax system. The winners will be awarded a total of $5,000 in scholarship funds with first place receiving a $2,500 scholarship. The second-place winner will receive $1,500 in scholarship money, and two honorable mentions will each be awarded $500.

“This year, our scholarship will challenge students to find and discuss alternatives to government services,” TRI Executive Director Dan Johnson said. “Many things that we fund through taxes today can be done better by creative Americans, and we’re challenging students to find and discuss those voluntary alternatives.”

The scholarship is paid directly to the educational institution in the student’s account to be used for tuition and/or books for the Fall 2017 semester. The scholarship monies may be used over a period not to exceed four years.

In order to qualify, applicants must be either a high-school senior or current college student and a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. Students must submit their application forms and essays no later than April 18, 2017, to be considered.

The scholarship winners will be announced on May 17, 2017, in honor of the anniversary of George Washington and colonial America’s protest of “taxation without representation” in 1769.

“It is rewarding for us at TRI to continue our support of Students for Liberty,” said TRI Legal Director Robert Rodrigo. “SFL continues to make positive changes in the United States and throughout the world.”
