RECOUNT EXPECTED TO REACH AS HIGH AS $6 MILLION

by Sharon Rondeau

michigan-ag(Dec. 5, 2016) — In an interview on “Your World” hosted by Neil Cavuto on Monday, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette stated that the recount of votes ordered in his state by federal Judge Mark Goldsmith last night “violates Michigan law.”

Goldsmith is an Obama appointee. His biography states, in part:

Judge Goldsmith is a past president of the Eastern District of Michigan Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, and served as that organization’s pro bono chair for many years. He has also served in the leadership of several community organizations, including Wayne State University’s Center for the Study of Citizenship, the Fair Housing Advisory Board (Oakland County) of the Legal Aid and Defender Association, Circle of Friends (teaching language and acculturation skills to immigrants), Forgotten Harvest (a distributor of food to the needy), and the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation League.

Schuette said that his office has appealed Goldsmith’s “midnight order” issued when the courtroom was allegedly “locked.”  “That’s not what Michigan law provides,” Schuette told Cavuto. “Michigan law needs to rule, not some federal authority.”

Schuette indicated that his office’s appeal to Goldsmith’s order will be heard on Tuesday.  He told Cavuto early in the five-minute interview that the recount is expected to cost between $4 million and $6 million to taxpayers, with just under $1 million having been provided by Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein’s funds.

Michigan election law can be read here.

Stein requested recounts in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan just after Thanksgiving.

Ren Jander, JD said that the “recanvass” of voting machines in Pennsylvania done on Monday violated that state’s election law.
