With a warrant in hand, Homeland Security Investigations Searches Rep. Ilhan Omar’s House

(Oct. 14, 2026) — According to The New York Times, back in June of 2024, the Biden administration began an investigation into Ilhan Omar’s financial dealings and campaign spending. Back then there was no wailing or gnashing of teeth from the media and those on the left. But now the media is upset that the Trump administration has opened up a new investigation into Omar. On Monday, early in the morning, Homeland Security Investigations executed a search warrant on the DC home of Representative Ilhan Omar. The consensus opinion of the legal pundits is that they are looking for information on her immigration path and whether it was done legally.
For years there have been rumors circulating that Omar, in an attempt to get her brother citizenship, married him. In 2009 she married a man named Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, and they were separated in 2011 and finally divorced in 2017. It seems that there were some social media posts, which now have been deleted, where a man named Ahmed Nur Said Elmi is listed as one of her brothers. What are the odds of someone marrying a person with the same name as their brother? Perhaps there is an innocent explanation. But marrying someone who is really your brother in an effort to give him citizenship is fraud. Would Ilhan Omar commit fraud? Well, she certainly wouldn’t be the first Somali to commit fraud. In fact, fraud is so strong in the Somali community that it may be likely that she engages in some fraud herself.
Reporters have tried for years to get to the bottom of this rumor but have not been able to conclude one way or the other, in part because Omar has been stonewalling. For example, she could put the matter to rest if she and the brother/husband would take a DNA test. I highly doubt she is going to do that. Where is the brother/husband? I believe he is now living in London, out of reach of American law. But I don’t think this is the focus of Monday morning’s raid. I think what Homeland Security is looking at is how Omar became a citizen, not how her brother did.
Omar’s immigration history is very vague, starting with the fact that she came here in 1995, not with her family but with another Somali family. But she got citizenship through her father, because it was assumed that she was a minor when her father applied for her citizenship. But that is now in doubt on two counts. Was he really a citizen, and was she really a minor when he applied for her? If she was born in 1982 or later then she would have been a minor when she became a citizen. But if she was born before 1982 then she could not get citizenship through her father. Some have suggested that she lied about her age, and some have even claimed to have seen her birth year listed as 1981. A woman lying about her age is commonplace and hardly illegal, but it is a crime if you lie on a government document. The other thing making this murkier is the fact that Somalia is such a failed state that I would not be surprised if Omar didn’t even get a birth certificate.
No surprise the Democrats are claiming that this is a baseless political attack on Omar and that she is as clean and pure as a Minnesota snowdrift. Furthermore, they claim this investigation (I notice they don’t use the term “witch hunt”), is a purposeful distraction from other issues, issues which the Democrats claim favors them.
In response to the charge that this investigation is politically motivated, Republicans should point out that a magistrate from DC signed off on the warrant, so there is at least some credence to this search.
Omar is as scandal-plagued as any member of Congress. She got in trouble over campaign finance, and her own finances. Suspiciously, at one time, on government documents, she claimed that she and her husband, not her previous husband/brother, was worth 30 million dollars, but she later revised that net worth to 95k.
Has Omar committed immigration fraud? I don’t know, but I wouldn’t put it past her. She has no respect for America or her laws. Maybe, this investigation will get to the truth, but no matter what I think her district in Minneapolis is so full of Democrats and Somalis that she can’t lose.
