(Aug. 27, 2026) — In the wake of a trade war with Canada, at 1:25 p.m. EDT, President Trump signed an executive order changing “Lake Ontario” to “Lake America.”
An agreement with the Canadian government was reportedly on the horizon last week, but talks fell through late in the process, administration officials said.
Trump has long said that trade between the U.S. and its northern neighbor are heavily imbalanced in Canada’s favor.
“The Canadians are treating us very badly,” Trump said in response to reporters’ questions. Canada is “the worst to deal with on trade,” he said.
“We’re going to be doing tariffs on their cars,” he said, adding that he wants automobiles to be made in the United States.
“We’re losing $62 billion a year with Canada,” he said in response to another question, and that the additional tariffs will “help” the U.S. economy.
The executive order takes effect “immediately,” he said upon its signing.
He took additional questions on the flooding crisis in Nepal, the 2028 presidential race, and his imminent trip to Texas to campaign for current Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is running for the U.S. Senate against Democrat James Talarico.
