(Feb. 27, 2025) — After, a half century of studies in eschatology (second coming of Christ) and a vision about the same, I have come to a few immutable conclusions.
The first is that most of Christianity has come to the belief that we are in the very last days preceding the return of Christ.
The other is that many are still bickering and contesting a few of the signs and the order in which they occur.
When we search for ‘trusted’ and ‘certified’ ministries we come upon another wall to scale.
The Pharisees in Jesus’s day were the ‘trusted’ interpreters of all scripture. Yet, Christ called them snakes, hypocrites and thieves. They were perfect as it pertains to the letter of the law, but they were dismal failures at interpreting the practical applications, the spiritual and the intuitive side of the law.
Little wonder that Jesus gave us a new way of approaching God called ‘grace.’
Because this is true, we should be forewarned that when it comes to second coming teachings, we must avoid the popular version, and trust only the scriptures and the Holy Spirit.
Like anything in life, some things can be nailed down while others require that we hold the views loosely in our hands so God can yank them out of our hand and make some revisions as time goes along.
The Jews argued the Messianic Prophecies (first coming of Christ) until thousands of the people missed the actual time of their Messiah and wallowed in endless arguments. We need not ask whether that could happen again – it is already here.
Even when we find ministries and preachers that are considered ‘trusted’ – there will always be some points we will not agree with.
Some disagreement is harmless, but some could be life endangering. An example of a harmless belief comes from the teachings of the late Hal Lindsey. I loved his teachings and along with God’s prompting in my life Lindsey’s books were a strong impetus for my initial studies.
But right out of the gate I noticed a blaring mistake.
Lindsey began his “The Late Great Planet Earth’ by describing how a false prophet would have been stoned to death in ancient Israel, if his prophecies turned out to be false.
The truth found in both the scriptures and in the historical record show something quite different. In fact, almost all of the prophets that were killed were true prophets. A rebellious ancient Israel did not take well to the constant call to repentance. They hated the interference.
Stephan, the first martyr of the church said:
“Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which showed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers.” (Acts 7:52)
Ancient Israelites had a thing for false gods and religions, and that included hundreds of false prophets. False prophets were always relatively safe because, they gave the rulers what they wanted to hear.
But just as I know to remove the bones from the fish before eating, I knew Hal Lindsey’s work could be trusted by me and others.
Are we confusing the entire world with our endless rapture controversies?
Two verses of scripture are a rock-solid guarantee that God will remove all his believers in a millisecond. There will be no fanfare, preliminary warnings or mistaking what is taking place. The believer will know it, and the rest of the world will observe it on a worldwide scale.
The words are straight up and clear as a bell.
“Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left” (Mt 24:40)
“In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.” (1Cor 15:52)
While the fact of the rapture is clear, the timing is not.
The largest group of Christians believe in a pre-tribulation rapture. That is a belief that before all the troubles begin at the arrival of Christ, he will get his own children out of the way.
The problem with this belief is that the man known as the Antichrist has a whole lot of his own troubles to cast on the entire world, including executions and death.
The second largest group of believers thinks that we will go through a lot of early troubles, but we will be removed midway through the last seven years of time. The midway point is when Antichrist does his final act and presents himself to be God in the newly rebuilt Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. This view is called the mid-tribulation Rapture.
“But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains.” (Mk 13:14)
The Antichrist will be standing in the middle of the Temple proclaiming his divinity and he continues on that path for the next 3 ½ years, that is what results in the judgment of God on the entire globe.
Finally, the smallest group are the post-tribulationists. They think all the troubles, the scenarios and the death will have finished before Christ lifts his people out of the earth.
The post-tribulation view has no chance of being accurate.
But the timing of the rapture still baffles theologians and preachers because it is hard to say just when the full wrath of God begins. It suffices to say that the worst of God’s judgment (wrath) begins at the blowing of the last trumpet which brings the dreaded seven vials of wrath to all humankind.
All these views are colored by another verse of scripture. In fact, it should always be used in conjunction with any rapture theory. Until we know the exact moment when God’s wrath begins, we cannot safely ascertain when the lifting away will happen.
Our confidence, is that God will not waste a single second of time, when he is about to judge this world – we will be gone, to wit:
“And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.” (1 Th 1:10)
God does not drop death and hell on his own children, would you?
