(Dec. 11, 2024) — On Wednesday FBI Director Christopher Wray announced he would resign prior to the inception of the second Donald J. Trump administration on January 20, 2025.
In an ironic twist given Wray was Trump’s nominee following his firing of then-FBI Director James Comey in February 2017, Trump reacted to the news on TruthSocial with, “The resignation of Christopher Wray is a great day for America as it will end the Weaponization of what has become known as the United States Department of Injustice. I just don’t know what happened to him…”
In 2016 or earlier as Trump sought the presidency for the first time, Comey’s FBI launched an investigation on the premise that individuals within his campaign “colluded” with the Russian government to commandeer the outcome of the election. Years later, Special Counsel John Durham found the FBI had no predicate for opening the probe, and an earlier inspector general report faulted the agency for “basic and fundamental errors” while conducting it.
According to Wikipedia, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie recommended Wray to Trump after Wray served as Christie’s personal attorney in a 2013 incident dubbed “Bridgegate” involving lane closures during rush hour at the Fort Lee, NJ entrance to the George Washington Bridge.
The scandal gave way to a federal investigation which yielded a “guilty” plea and two other convictions later overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Christie was cleared of wrongdoing in the matter and emerged a strong supporter of Trump after dropping his own bid for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, only to later condemn Trump for allegedly retaining “classified documents” after leaving the White House and criticize his presidency.
On November 30, Trump announced his nomination of former Justice Department official and Pentagon liaison, trial attorney and key House Intelligence Committee investigator Kash Patel to lead the FBI, prompting the assumption that Trump would again fire an FBI director.
Trump’s lengthy post following Wray’s declaration continued with optimism and criticism of Wray’s performance.
“We will now restore the Rule of Law for all Americans,” the president-elect wrote. “Under the leadership of Christopher Wray, the FBI illegally raided my home, without cause, worked diligently on illegally impeaching and indicting me, and has done everything else to interfere with the success and future of America. They have used their vast powers to threaten and destroy many innocent Americans, some of which will never be able to recover from what has been done to them. Kash Patel is the most qualified Nominee to lead the FBI in the Agency’s History, and is committed to helping ensure that Law, Order, and Justice will be brought back to our Country again, and soon. As everyone knows, I have great respect for the rank-and-file of the FBI, and they have great respect for me. They want to see these changes every bit as much as I do but, more importantly, the American People are demanding a strong, but fair, System of Justice. We want our FBI back, and that will now happen. I look forward to Kash Patel’s confirmation, so that the process of Making the FBI Great Again can begin. Thank you!”
