(Nov. 9, 2024) — There once was an ungrateful gnome,
Who refused to travel from home.
He insisted he knew all the world had to teach,
So from his front porch he would rock and he’d preach.
For years all his friends would come and stop by,
Saying, “Hobart, come now, and be a fun guy,
“Your words make us worry, weary and sad,
Buck up, me boy, life’s really not bad!”
But Hobart kept rocking and preaching his truth,
In ways quite insulting and very uncouth.
Until the day came when no one stopped by,
Now, without friends, Hobart gave a big sigh.
He remembered the faces that would smile his way,
He remembered the children that laughed in their play.
Looking up, he noticed the sun was not shining,
Hidden by clouds, his heart went to pining.
“How was it,” he thought, “have I been so blind?
“My opinions and worry have made me unkind.
“No wonder my friends have all turned away,
“I wish they were here. But what would I say?”
Begin, my dear Hobart, by trusting in Him,
Who made you and blessed you and gives peace within.
Then seek to be the friend you once had,
Loving and thoughtful and making all glad.
Be open, be honest, but put others first,
If focused on you, you’ll only get worse.
Attitude of gratitude is just what you need,
Start with thanksgiving, then you’re planting good seed.
