Dear Editor:

2024 Democrat presidential candidate Kamala D. Harris (US Senate photo)

When someone, especially one who can influence how my family lives, says they are progressive, they have my attention. I am all for advancement.

Kamala Harris is the progressive candidate in the 2024 election, the champion of A New Way Forward. So I ask her, as I would any progressive: What is the destination? Where will your new way take us?

The best compass, especially with an incumbent, is not their words but the way they have been. As Patrick Henry declared, “I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging of the future but by the past.”

Of all the vice president’s achievements, three stand out to me.

  • Her administration robbed female athletes of awards they duly deserved and gave them to male competitors.
  • Her administration elevated to the Supreme Court a judge who severs the word “woman” from its basic meaning (female) and says we can’t define it.
  • Harris has resurrected what she and President Biden didn’t accomplish together: restructure the Supreme Court.

This record tells me the vice president is about breaking down norms to convolute new ones:

  • Women’s sports stripped of their specialty and women’s privacy no longer private;
  • A judicial system where justice is suspect because no one can define fundamental terms.
  • Our government reconstituted, with the Supreme Court declawed of its checks and balances and softened into a rubber stamp.

What is the end of this progress? I can only conclude we will have a culture where anything goes, even more than it already does. It seems that rather than preserve the Constitution she would swear to uphold, Harris would overhaul it to her liking.

We have walked a way with Vice President Harris. Contemplating the next steps leads me to believe her New Way Forward is no way for me.

What is interesting to me is that it seems like Harris’ identifying her way as taking us in a new direction is an admission that the current presidency was taking us in a wrong one. Why then should I believe that the evidence of their failure can now lead us into a success?
