(Sep. 6, 2024) — Once there was a kingdom ruled by a moody little princess. While technically Amelia’s parents were king and queen, in a larger sense, it was Amelia who ruled, as her moods were what controlled the weather. When the princess was happy, the farmers rushed out to their fields to plant in the sun as fast as they could, for they knew at any moment the storm clouds could roll in, if the princess found something to suddenly be upset about.
For years the kingdom struggled to live their lives in peace and prosperity, as Princess Amelia’s moods were unpredictable and easily changed. Then, one day, a nightingale from the far east heard of the people’s plight. He nodded wisely and set off to find the king. The bird told the king of a plan he had to steady the child’s moods. The king was desperate, and willing to try anything, thus he gave his consent to the plan.
The nightingale found Amelia sulking (only Heaven knows why) under a young apple tree in the garden. Lightly, he perched beside her, and gently began a conversation. First, he complimented her appearance, then he kindly inquired about her mood. The princess slowly opened up to the little bird and soon felt at ease with this new friend. Once a bond had been formed the wise nightingale presented her with the problem at hand, namely her changeable moods. To his surprise, the princess was aware; she felt badly about the trouble, and was willing to consider any solutions. The nightingale then presented his idea: “I will help you control your moods with my songs. When you are sad in the summer, I will sing a merry tune all season to keep you happy. Likewise, I will sing melancholy music in the winter in order to bring rain and snow. And those are only two examples of my versatile range and your many moods.”

The princess agreed. Thus, Amelia gained a best friend and learned how to control her moods. May we all learn the lesson to be wise, listen, be a friend and find power in music.
