The Wolfman Cometh (RR)

It was a creeping sensation, is what it was. Let me explain. At first I thought I was going off my rocker; I mean, there I was looking at myself in the mirror every morning, shaving, but it wasn’t me that was shaving; it was some other. Oh, I became me after I shaved the other, but it didn’t become me like automatically.

I first noticed my ears; I mean, the hairs growing in and on my ears, growing fast and, really, getting thick and long. That was strange to behold. A new sensation. A surprise. And then the nose hairs growing as I was losing my head hair. It was like seeing the Wolfman.

“Greetings, Mr. Wolfman, and we hope you had a pleasant sleep.”

At the same time youth was fading like a distant memory. I used to run, I did; I enjoyed running so I was on the track and cross-country team in high school, not to win, but to run. Looking back, I wish I had won, but that wasn’t the point, now, was it? The point was to run for the fun of it. Now, I mean today, the Wolfman doesn’t run. Forget it.

And this is my declaration to the end of my youth, my formal goodbye, as it is.

Goodbye, misspent youth, never to be held again, with only a sea of regret left behind like a puddle evaporating even as we watch the image in the mirror becoming dimmer with each passing year.
