(Nov. 18, 2023) — With the approval of Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA4) on Friday, the Committee on House Administration’s Subcommittee on Oversight, chaired by Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA11), began releasing video footage of the events of January 6, 2021 at the U.S. Capitol deemed by many to have been an “insurrection” and cause to arrest and imprison hundreds of citizens, some of whom were not present in the nation’s capital that day.
The government narrative, which extends to a Colorado judge issuing an opinion Friday as to whether the name of 45th President Donald J. Trump should be allowed on that state’s primary ballot in January, is that Trump supporters planned and executed the “insurrection” in order to interrupt the “peaceful transfer of power” from Trump to Joe Biden as a result of the November 3, 2020 presidential election.
An unknown but perhaps significant number of Americans do not believe Biden won the election fairly in the midst of hundreds of firsthand testimonies provided to state legislators alleging inappropriate handling of ballots, questionably authentic ballots, and the barring of Republican election observers in Pennsylvania and other locations, among other issues.
On Friday Johnson posted on “X,” formerly Twitter:
When I ran for Speaker, I promised to make accessible to the American people the 44,000 hours of video from Capitol Hill security taken on January 6, 2021. Truth and transparency are critical. Today, we will begin immediately posting video on a public website and move as quickly as possible to add to the website nearly all of the footage, more than 40,000 hours. In the meantime, a public viewing room will ensure that every citizen can view every minute of the videos uncensored.
This decision will provide millions of Americans, criminal defendants, public interest organizations, and the media an ability to see for themselves what happened that day, rather than having to rely upon the interpretation of a small group of government officials.
I commend Chairman Loudermilk and his team for their diligent work to ensure the thousands of hours of videos are promptly processed to be uploaded to the committee’s public website. Processing will involve blurring the faces of private citizens on the yet unreleased tapes to avoid any persons from being targeted for retaliation of any kind and segregating an estimated 5% of the videos that may involve sensitive security information related to the building architecture.
A press release issued Friday from the subcommittee states that beginning that day, “all video footage previously released to media outlets will be uploaded to an online viewing room for public access. This includes all videos released to Tucker Carlson and other media. Following the initial tranche of footage, the Subcommittee will continue to populate the viewing room with additional footage for public view.”
In addition to the online portal, U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents will be able to view the footage from within the subcommittee’s offices in the Capitol, the statement further reveals. A link at the bottom of the press release leads to the complete rules for access and/or requests for individual video clips.
Fallout from January 6
Five days after January 6, 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives, led by then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA12), impeached Trump a second time for allegedly engaging in “incitement of insurrection” by giving a speech at the Ellipse to approximately a million supporters prior to the convening of Congress to purportedly count the electoral votes submitted by the states.
In his address, Trump called for those physically able to walk over to the Capitol and “peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.”
Although acquitted for a second time of impeachment allegations by the U.S. Senate in February 2021, the exercise could have been motivated by the intent of a future party invoking Section 3 of the 14th Amendment against Trump should he decide to again seek the presidency. The tactic has recently been employed by not only citizens in Colorado, but also in Michigan, Minnesota, Florida, New Hampshire and many others, in an effort to prohibit Trump’s name from appearing on respective state ballots next year.
While stopping short of charging Trump with orchestrating or participating in the “insurrection,” in early August Special Counsel Jack Smith, appointed by Biden’s attorney general, Merrick Garland, nevertheless charged Trump with disseminating “false information” that he allegedly knew to be false regarding the outcome of the election.
Trump, who is currently the 2024 Republican primary presidential frontrunner, has questioned on his TruthSocial account why he has been both civilly and criminally charged in four jurisdictions now when the prosecutors could have initiated their actions “years ago,” calling it “election interference” and “prosecutorial misconduct.”
