Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu’s “The Spirit of the Laws,” first edition, 1748 (public domain)

Dear Editor,

“The Spirit of Laws” is a famous work by 17th century-born, French judge, historian and political philosopher, Montesquieu.

Perhaps so many Australians some 300 years after Montesquieu’s writings are so very, very wary of PM Anthony Albanese’s (the PM who hasn’t yet read it all?) proposed Australian-Constitution-amending “Voice Direct to Parliament” because Montesquieu’s words of warning, “Useless laws weaken the necessary laws,” are loudly echoing right across Australia…right now?

Yours,
