Dear Editor,

Portrait of Charles de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu,” anonymous painter, public domain

Terry McCrann’s wonderfully insightful  “How Covid and Voice Trashed Reason”, HS, 18/4, should (along with Adam Creighton and Robert Gottliebsen’s referenced columns in The Australian) be read by every senior high school and university student, their parents, and teachers/tutors.

Why? Because Terry’s championing-of-‘reason’ (instead of emotions/hysteria) article is best summed up by Montesquieu’s:

What unhappy beings men are! They constantly waver between false hopes, and silly fears, and instead of relying on reason, they create monsters to frighten themselves with, and phantoms, which lead them astray!

And reinforced by Luc De Clapiers‘s “Emotions have taught mankind to reason.”

Yours,
