Dear Editor,

“Let the culls begin!” I say to the ever-woke-folk-oriented RSPCA (Roo meat off shelves, HS, 3/10), as I’ve seen many hundreds of kangaroos for tens of kilometres around the Lilydale Gateway to the Yarra Valley where large numbers of ‘roos exist (many a menace) despite British white-fella colonisation! And Alyssa Wormald, Victorian Kangaroo Alliance, wild and emotive (in fact, indirectly cruel), misguided media campaigns are being waged against absolutely necessary professionally and humanely-carried-out kangaroo culls (including spurious claims of gene pool dilutions which roaming junior Old Man buck kangaroos soon put paid to such errant nonsense)!

Is my contention, Ms Wormald (and the RSPCA), that there are even more kangaroos in Australia today than before European settlement wrong? Am I wrong to contend that the proliferation of water bores, dams, irrigation channels, and irrigated pastures now far, far out in the outer reaches of Australia have brought all-seasons-available water and food for the kangaroo, where there never was any of either before?

The kangaroo, Ms Wormald (and the RSPCA), is now very much protected and is not hunted (even with high-powered rifles) by Aborigines to the same extent today, because European settlement has brought Aborigines readily-available Gelati ice-cream, Souvlaki, KFC, Red Rooster, Maccas, tripe, etc. food and off-the-shelf tattered denims, etc. clothing (with no need for ‘roo skin garments). Am I so wrong?

Having seen ‘roos in plague proportions a number of times, I say farmers, housing estate developers, sporting clubs, municipalities, etc. are merely protecting the environment (not to mention all wildlife species) when ensuring very healthy numbers of very healthy kangaroos within their own boundaries, as is their right!
