(Mar. 12, 2022) — Our stalwart lawmakers in Washington never cease to amaze.

John Binder of Breitbart reports on a recent undertaking on Capitol Hill. It’s an amendment to an amendment that authorizes millions of new dollars for border security.

That sounds impressive, until you realize the money is being appropriated for the borders of eight foreign countries!

It’s not that our lawmakers don’t care about borders. They do care about the borders of many foreign countries.

It’s our own borders many of them aren’t concerned about securing.

The article begins thusly:

A Democrat spending bill, negotiated with Republicans, uses American taxpayer money to fund ‘border security’ measures in eight foreign countries while including no new funds to construct a border wall along the United States-Mexico border.

The bill to which Binder is referring is a House Amendment to the Senate Amendment to H.R. 2471. You can see it here.

So what’s in this amendment to an amendment?

Here’s what Binder reports:

The government funding package  spends about $370 million in taxpayer money to fund ‘enhanced border security’ in Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia, and Oman. At least $150 million of that funding is allocated for Jordan’s borders.

Likewise, the package includes taxpayer money to fund border security in Libya, ‘border security activities’ in Nepal, and ‘border security programs’ in Pakistan.

Isn’t that something? Most of the $370 million is destined for the Middle East, the region where our foreign policy has been least successful.

How about our own border?

Though Republicans were able to preserve nearly $2 billion in previously-allocated border wall construction funds, the package does not include any new border wall funding.

Well, we can at least be thankful that previously-allocated funding was preserved.

And yes, I know that $370 million is pocket change in the big congressional budgetary picture.

But still, it’s something, and that money could be spent here in the U.S.A., or maybe not spent at all.

It’s also the principle of the thing. Why devote our funds to foreign borders when we aren’t controlling our own?

The real problem is not just the funding, it’s the Biden administration’s deliberate policy that allows an ongoing invasion of our country.

As Binder reports:

While funding border security overseas, President Joe Biden has halted all border wall construction along the U.S.-Mexico border, gutted interior immigration enforcement, and attempted to end the anti-asylum fraud Remain in Mexico program.

As a result, more than two million border crossers and illegal aliens arrived at the nation’s southern border in all of last year. This year, experts predict more than 2.1 million to arrive — a record.

At the same time, hundreds of thousands of border crossers and illegal aliens are being released into the U.S. interior every few months. From January 2021 to August 2021, for example, more than half a million were released into the U.S. interior.

And it’s still going on.

In January of this year, more than 62,500 border crossers and illegal aliens were released into the U.S. interior — a foreign population more than twice the size of Princeton, New Jersey; nearly twice the size of Lexington, Massachusetts; and more than six times the size of Jackson, Wyoming.

Suppose the Republicans win back at least one chamber of Congress in November. What will they do? What can they do?

Well, they can pass some good legislation if they get enough votes. But Biden would still be president.

How about impeachment? Doesn’t Biden deserve it for his dereliction on the border?

Just imagine if Biden were impeached, specifically for his border policy. Even if there are not enough votes to remove him from office, the hearings on the issue would be a great education for the public.

The Republicans could have a winning issue on immigration, if they handle it right.

Based on their previous record, I don’t have a lot of confidence in congressional Republicans, but I’d love to be proven wrong.
