RECENT IMPROVEMENTS PROVIDE BETTER PROTECTION

The same goes for women who wear these vests for some other reasons, apart from the line of duty. Essentially, body armor is not designed for the female anatomy, which is the reason that they do not offer enough protection and comfort for women. The problem is evident- female curves and body contours are the cause of size fit issues. However, a lot is being done in this direction. Before talking further about ballistic vests that fit the female form seamlessly, let us explain the problems first.
The problems of bad fits
Law enforcement was historically a male-dominated domain and had fewer women in service. Obviously, protective gear including body armor was designed for the male body. As women have to wear these vests, they have always been facing the issue of fits. This means that manufacturers need to come up body armor options that are just right for the female body. With the natural curves of the female anatomy, gaps are bound to be there, specifically between the breasts and at the waist. These gaps can compromise the protection levels during critical situations. Apart from safety concerns, female wearers also face discomfort due to ill fitting armor. The vest may shift around or the velcro sides may burst open all the time. There can also be significant pressure on their thoracic area due to the awkward fit. Admit it or not, there is a problem with ill-fitted ballistic vests and women almost always have to deal with it.

While there is a problem, fortunately efforts are being made to resolve it. The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) has come up with new standards for bringing improvement in the testing methods for female armor. Additionally, body armor brands are coming up with better materials and better engineering to produce vests that can form themselves to the wearer, regardless of their shape, size or sex. The solution resolves fit issues for female law enforcement officers, military personnel, first responders and civilians alike. These vests are a perfect choice for women who prioritize comfortable fit and want protection of vital organs as well.
Factors considered in the new NIJ standard
When it comes to creating the right kind of ballistic protection for women, the NIJ considers certain factors. The body shape and weight proportion play a significant role when it comes to fits. Obviously, vests designed and tested specifically for men would be loose for the typical female figure. At the same time, they do not account for larger breasts which can cause unintended gaps between the armor and the wearer’s torso. Apart from the body shape and distribution of weight, height is another factor that can influence the fit. Manufacturers, therefore, need to test and product sizes that are apt for petite or smaller statured women.
As manufacturers are taking the problems of female armor more seriously, they are going the extra mile to address them. Apart from coming up with new materials, they are also using cup sizing and darting techniques for better fits. Truly, it’s all about perfect fits!
