(Mar. 25, 2020) — “These are the times that try men’s souls.”  So begins the first paragraph of the first of thirteen pamphlets written by Thomas Paine in December 1776 – The American Crisis seeking to encourage and rally support in the Colonists for the coming Revolutionary War…, yes, Virginia, that conflict with Great Britain which gave birth to the United States of America.

The series of pamphlets – published in colonial newspapers in a bygone era when principled, objective journalism flourished rather than, as now, atrophied – served to provide encouragement to a population of Colonists who at the time dreaded and were terrified of confronting the most powerful military force on the planet.  Paine’s first pamphlet holds some good advice for contemporary Americans.

Today, our nation is faced with two dangerous forces, one a global organic disease pandemic, the other a political pestilence.  The first is called the Wuhan/COVID-19 coronavirus.  The second is called the Democrat Party in the U.S. Congress.

The battle against the first peril, the coronavirus disease, rages on, with the “spread” of the virus being fought by gentle directives from the government to wash your hands, practice “social distancing” in public and hunker down in your homes.  There is also some encouraging anecdotal evidence emerging that a combination of existing drugs – hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin – may be effective in blunting or even curing symptomatic elements of the disease.

Naturally, because President Trump has publicly expressed hope that these drugs might be useful in the fight, Nevada Democrat Governor Steve Sisolak has issued an executive order banning the use of hydroxychloroquine as a medication to fight the virus.   The effort continues to fight the virus on the medicinal front until an effective vaccine can be developed, tested and deployed, perhaps one to two years out.

The fight against the organic disease aside, an equally perilous if not more important battle is festering in Washington, D.C.  There, President Trump, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and virtually every Republican Senator and Representative are in locked combat with those who would wish to see the United States crippled: the Democrats in the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The Democrats’ goal of hobbling America is, in many respects, no different than the goals of Iran, North Korea and China, the original source of the Wuhan virus.  Oh, and the “Squad,” too.   For the moment, it appears that the adults in the room – President Trump and Mitch McConnell – have defeated Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Führer Pelosi by crafting a two trillion dollar ($2,000,000,000,000.00) economic stimulus/rescue bill.  Desperate times call for desperate measures.

However, Pelosi continues to undermine President Trump and, parenthetically, the fortunes of all Democrats this coming November by petulantly delaying a House vote on the relief bill.  Remember her “slow-walking” of the impeachment articles?  How juvenile; how stupid; how Pelosi.

If the bill eventually passes (as this offering being composed, a final vote in the Senate and House and signing by President Trump still lies in the future), a dramatic step will have been taken in the journey to make sure the “cure” for the virus does not end up killing the patient, the United States.

As your faithful servant has noted, if at the end of the day, when the virus “spread curve” flattens, there are no large or small businesses left, no jobs left and no farmers left…, it will not matter whether people can find bathroom tissue.  A flattened spread curve is totally irrelevant in a flattened America.

But cheer up, faithful P&E readers, because there is a glimmer of hope: the electorate need not wait two years for a vaccine or for FDA approval of a drug to fight the political pestilence being fomented by Schumer and Pelosi.  Instead, the electorate will have an opportunity on November 3, 2020 to eradicate the political toxins being proudly marketed by the Democrats in Congress: every single Democrat who is up for re-election, as well as any Democrat initially running for the Senate or the House, should be defeated.  Period.  No exceptions.

To reiterate, once again, the Democrats, led by the likes of Schumer and Pelosi, have proven beyond any doubt – let alone any reasonable doubt – that they have forever forfeited any claim of right, ability or competence to govern a free people in this constitutional republic.   And John F. Kennedy would be rotating in his grave to learn that Pelosi was blackmailing McConnell on the relief bill on the claim that a $35 million grant to the JFK Center for the Performing Arts in D.C. was “essential” to the battle against the Wuhan coronavirus. Really?

Oh, yeah…, I channeled both JFK and Thomas Paine this morning.  They agree with your faithful servant.  The rest is up to you.
