(Jan. 16, 2020) — As reported earlier, at approximately 2:08 p.m. EST, the Senate “Escort Committee,” consisting of four U.S. Senators appointed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, entered the Senate chamber followed by U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts for their swearing-in for the impeachment trial of President Donald John Trump.
Senate Pro Tempore Charles Grassley swore in Roberts at 2:10 p.m., after which Grassley said to Roberts, “God bless you.”
Roberts, who appeared in his black robe and will preside over the trial, then immediately swore in the entire U.S. Senate in an oath tasking them to be “impartial.” Roberts announced that each senator would then “sign the oath book.”
The White House will be given formal notice of his impeachment and impending trial, Bret Baier of Fox News reported at 2:11 p.m.
The trial will commence Tuesday after the Martin Luther King holiday.
