(Nov. 12, 2019) — If you’ve not been involved in an accident before, you might not know if you need a personal injury lawyer. Some people like to represent themselves, or may not know whether their accident is “serious” enough to involve a lawyer. There are many excellent personal injury lawyers in the States, such as Sinklaw, and you certainly should use them when necessary. So, if you’ve been in an accident, how do you know when you need a personal injury lawyer?

It wasn’t your fault

It may seem obvious, but if you’ve been in an accident and it wasn’t your fault, then you should call a personal injury lawyer. When accidents occur because of the negligence of others, especially in a workplace environment or on the road, you could be entitled to compensation – especially if the accident has meant that you have been unable to go to work, or has had a significant impact on your life. A personal injury lawyer will have experience handling cases like yours and will know the best approach. Most injury lawyers don’t charge if the case is won, too, so if the accident wasn’t your fault you most likely won’t have to pay.

You can’t represent yourself

Some people don’t contact a personal injury lawyer because they want to represent themselves. However, many people don’t feel comfortable doing so, or aren’t able to due to health issues or other commitments. Unless you know a lot about the law and are comfortable with public speaking, it may not be the best idea to represent yourself in court. There will be a lot of jargon and you would have to do a lot of research beforehand, which may be stressful when recovering from an injury. If you ask a personal injury lawyer to represent you, they will use their experience and knowledge to fight in your corner and give you the best possible chance of winning the case.

You’re not sure what happened

If you’ve been involved in an accident, you may have had a brain injury that affects your memory. This might mean that you’re not completely clear about what happened during the accident. Alternatively, many people who have been involved in accidents struggle to be objective, and give one-sided versions of the event. Whilst this is completely understandable, a personal injury lawyer will be able to look at the accident in an objective manner and present a calm, well-reasoned case that reflects the events accurately. This means that you’ll be more likely to get your compensation.

You don’t want to go to court

Whilst many cases go to court, the great thing about personal injury lawyers is that they can make settlements. This means that a lump sum is agreed before the case goes to court. When you’re injured, the thought of going to court might make you feel stressed or overwhelmed. Therefore, it might be easier to get a personal injury lawyer to discuss compensation before that happens and make the process as simple as possible.
