FORMAL ANNOUNCEMENT TO COME ON THURSDAY

by Sharon Rondeau

(Nov. 30, 2016) — On Tuesday evening, President-Elect Donald J. Trump tweeted that negotiations with executives at Carrier Corporation in Indiana announced on Thanksgiving Day culminated in the company’s agreement not to relocate approximately 1,000 jobs from Indianapolis to Monterrey, Mexico in the near future.

On Thursday, Trump and Vice-President-Elect Mike Pence, who is governor or Indiana until he and Trump are sworn in on January 20, 2017, will be speaking at Carrier about the agreement, which Trump characterized as a “Great deal for workers!”

NBC News reported that Pence played an important role in the negotiations.

During the 17-month presidential campaign, Trump emphasized that if elected, he would work to maintain or return jobs to the United States.  In the early hours of November 9, Trump achieved an electoral over Democrat presidential contender Hillary Clinton with the announcement that Wisconsin’s 10 electoral votes and Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral votes would be awarded to him.

Carrier is the second company which, after negotiating with the New York billionaire following the election, has agreed to keep a part of its operations in the United States, with Ford Motor Company in Kentucky being the first.

An ABC Channel 6 timeline of the events leading to Tuesday’s announcement begins with Carrier’s February 10 declaration to its workforce that at the time, 1,400 jobs would be relocated to Mexico.

Carrier, which manufactures air-conditioning and heating systems, confirmed the “deal” on Twitter.

Indianapolis Carrier employees are members of Local 1999.  Its parent company is United Technologies.

Channel 6 reported that 400 jobs will still move to Mexico, where Carrier has a large manufacturing operation already established.

Trump is author of The Art of the Deal, of which The New York Editorial Board wrote, “Trump makes one believe for a moment in the American dream again.”
