“IT’S ABOUT MONEY”
by Anonymous Inmate, TTCC, Hartsville, Trousdale County, TN

(Jun. 17, 2016) — [Editor’s Note: The following letter shares an inmate’s thoughts about Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) Commissioner Derrick Schofield, who resigned his post earlier this month and will work his last day on Monday. Schofield was appointed by Gov. Bill Haslam and has accepted an executive vice-presidential position with The GEO Group, a private company which operates prisons around the world.
On Tuesday, Haslam announced the appointment of Tony Parker as Schofield’s replacement.
The author of the letter was the first to detail the conditions at Tennessee’s newest prison, TTCC, wherein short-staffing has caused long periods of solitary confinement for minimum-security inmates, the failure to dispense medication, dangerous conditions for both inmates and staff, and visitation schedules frequently interrupted or preempted by lockdown situations.
TTCC is operated by Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), which has not responded to The Post & Email’s several requests for comment on the reported conditions at the Trousdale County facility.
Additional first- and second-hand accounts of life at TTCC can be found here, here and here, among many others.]
