MOTHER OF SEVEN STRUGGLES TO MAKE ENDS MEET
from Erica Henderson

(May 1, 2013) — [Editor’s Note: The following message was posted by Erica Michelle Henderson, the mother of seven children who have been in foster care through the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) for nearly two years.
In March, a “liberalization” plan for visitation with the expressed goal of eventual family reunification was implemented. Between the end of March and the beginning of April, the entire Henderson family enjoyed two overnight visits which were especially meaningful because the first took place during the Jewish high holiday of Passover.
Following the second overnight visit, Erica became aware that a group of individuals had conveyed false and malicious information about her husband Jeffrey and her to which a close friend of the family recently attested. Erica and Jeffrey have separated, with Erica now attempting to develop financial independence in the hope of regaining custody of her children at some point.

I am still $700 shy of my rent for May. I wish I could share more details with you about my plan for self-sufficiency and income that will carry through the rest of my trials, but I know an ugly group of women will use that info to hurt me. I receive calls from friends, family, acquaintances, even my bill companies with information that someone who knows me is saying terrible things about me. I wish I could share the details of my life the way I used to, but I do not think it is wise at this time. At this time I am trying to make it in the world alone without the company of my husband or children and I am ashamed to admit that I still need help. I do. If you can please help me one more time.
