Resolution to Suspend Rules to Allow Contempt of Congress Passed/Health Care Dissent

ADDITIONAL DISCUSSION THIS AFTERNOON

Why did Supreme Court Chief Justice say that the individual mandate is constitutional as a tax when it wasn't presented that way?

(Jun. 28, 2012) — The amended resolution to suspend the rules to then vote on holding Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress has passed. The House will have an hour of discussion this afternoon before a final vote is taken.

Congressional Republicans are questioning the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court, which stated that the individual mandate is a tax, although it was not presented that way in the bill.  C-Span showed Reps. Michele Bachmann, Sandy Adams and others stated the upcoming election was a way for “We the People” to limit the power of the federal government.  Rep. John Mica indicated his concern about the health care bill’s impact on senior citizens and that it would “limit their choices.”  “Individual freedom is being destroyed…under this decision,” he said.  He stated that small businesses will be harmed by the imposition of the health care bill.  “This is a bad day for business; this is a bad day for our senior citizens…and Congress needs to repeal this now!!”

The House reconvened and voted on the second five-minute vote unrelated to the contempt vote on Holder.

At 2:18 p.m., C-Span has stated that debate on the contempt resolution will last 50 hours, not an hour.
