WESTERN CIVILIZATION OFFERS EQUAL OPPORTUNITY

(May 15, 2012) — “When in Rome,” as the saying goes. I read the other day of a death threat towards a person who spoke out against Sharia Law in the United States. Now, this is something that makes the word “immature” sound like the wisdom of the ages. Think about it: a Muslim dictating what is acceptable behavior to a Westerner. Let’s examine the complete disconnect of the followers of Muhammad in regards to Western Civilization’s values.
There used to be a television program hosted by Art Linkletter, and during his weekly episodes he would interview a bunch of children, boys and girls, and, basically, solicit outlandish comments, which was pretty easy to do. No matter what the young ones came up with, it was always good fun, even comments about Sunday School and Jesus.
We encourage our young adults to use their imagination, rewarding thinking outside the box during the Science Fair and Short Fiction Story Writing. And then, when adulthood arrives, those with marketable talent in the arts often become admired, if for nothing else than for having followed their dream of becoming an artist, sculptor, composer, or maybe a writer, to name a few. Each discipline possesses its own brand of extraordinary ability to express the human condition: Rodin carving “The Thinker,” Van Gogh painting “Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear,” Salmon Rushdie penning “The Satanic Verses.”
Western Civilization extends all things legal to both sexes equally. For instance, if a woman decides she wishes to be a doctor of medicine, the only real impediment is measured in desire and commitment. She may decide to be a rocket scientist, or a test pilot; maybe a lawyer, or a housewife, or a wallpaper hanger. There is no limit imposed on her due to her sex. Public school is mandatory for boys and girls until the age of 16: equal opportunity.
The truth of the matter is that since the emergence of Muhammad, time has stood still for Muslims. There are a number of reasons for Muslims to be trapped in the year 700 AD, but the most glaring is that when a defined group ostracizes half of its brain trust, achieving positive results is impossible. Excluding females from schools has been just as devastating to Muslims as the Germans’ discarding of “Jewish Science” was to the Third Reich during World War II.
We have the Constitution, and to impose Neanderthal standards of behavior on a 21st century population is the wish of a child. Western Civilization has not interfered with the draconian laws of Muslim nations. The United Nations has remained mute on the subject of denying women an equal education to men, and Western organizations such as NOW have turned a blind eye to the atrocities committed in the name of Allah, such as beatings, disfigurements, and honor killings. The argument is that because the West has left Islamic countries to fall behind the rest of mankind, it does not give Muslims the right to demand that we give up our advances in political rights (Magna Carta, US Constitution), social rights (women suffrage), and human rights (Bill of Rights, Civil Rights).
If I were to emigrate to another country, the first thing I would do is to learn its language and laws, and the last thing I would do is become a pain in trying to change my adopted country to mirror my former country. I expect the same consideration for those who visit my country; anything less is unacceptable.
