WHEN DID THE REPUBLICAN PARTY CHANGE ITS STANCE ON INDIVIDUAL LIBERTIES?

by Gary Stevens

The Republican Party arose as an opponent of slavery in 1854. What does it stand for now?

(Oct. 30, 2011) — Historically the Republican Party has truly been a party for and of the people. The strides of freedom forged by many since the “Gallant Old Party” (the original meaning of the nickname) came to be known in 1875. Abolition. Free speech. Women’s suffrage. These were all causes the Republican Party adopted early on. So, too, were reducing the size of government, streamlining bureaucracy, and returning power to individual states. With a core belief in the primacy of individuals, the Republican Party, since its inception, has been at the forefront of the fight for individuals’ rights in opposition to a large, intrusive government. A cursory glance of cycles in political power reveals a combined numeric edge of Democrats controlling both houses even with a Republican president at times. Back and forth the cycles go of political/government control. Have you ever wondered, with all the promises politicians make to secure your vote, why we are in such a mess? The debt is staggering. “I promise a balanced budget and sound fiscal responsibility” is uttered at every campaign stop.   The wars are endless.  “I’ll have our troops home for good,” another candidate will proclaim. “I have a plan to create jobs,” another catch-line is shouted through the microphone by a potential candidate.  Are you tired of the lies? “Oh, come on; that is normal campaign speech-making; they are not lies.”  Really? So then our words are not to be taken too seriously? Why have speeches then? What are words supposed to convey? If both parties juggle legislative and executive power through the term cycles with influence to the future and well-being of our Republic, to whom are they accountable? The usual answer is “to ‘we the people.'”

“GOP” no longer is the acronym (acrostic) for Grand Old Party.  It stands for Grant Obama Power! To that suggestion eyebrows just raised, readers as lovers of this Republic refute the above sentence. Yes, it’s pretty alarming to watch the decay before our eyes of any semblance of honor, oath keeping, integrity, and courage to not only say the truth, but stand up for it. How do we know the new definition of GOP means Grant Obama Power? All CONgress knows the hard cold facts of barry soetero fraudulently usurping the Oval Office. You’ve written letters, sent faxes, asked for staff appointments, presented bona fide evidence from credible sources of crimes committed. What is their response? Well, there you have it; answer honestly. Have you received any indication that they care about the destruction of America? No.  Zip. Nada. Zilch. Zero.

Do not succumb to the other lies that Republicans stand for limited government, Constitutional adherence, moral values, and fiscal responsibility, etc. The proof over the years has been revealed. Neither party upholds principles upon which they campaign and convey with convincing passion. Why is it that NOT one Republican or Democrat will stand up for you as a citizen and ultimate (back when) employer of their office as public servant?

The elephant became a symbol for the GOP from a cartoon by political cartoonist Thomas Nast which appeared in Harper’s Weekly in 1874.  Nast drew a donkey clothed in lion’s skin, scaring away all the animals at the zoo. One of those animals, the elephant, was labeled “The Republican Vote.” That’s all it took for the elephant to become associated with the Republican Party. Read more: Why the Donkey and Elephant?

In reality, Republicans have become the jackasses (donkey), and the elephant in the room is a putative president who fraudulently obtained and continues in office because the GOP now stands for Grant Obama Power. The sheer squishing weight of the elephant in the room has fractured the foundation of liberty and justice for all. At the top of this article, the historical facts mentioned the values of the original GOP agenda which are no longer. The Party values have died. There never was a funeral. There is mourning and grieving of the loss but political family members once loyal have departed from supporting the lie. Freedom is waning in the balance of a scale that has an elephant tipping it solidly one direction. That direction is suffocating the last gasps of free air still lingering but diminishing each day. Silence isn’t golden; it is suicide.

  2. Gary Stevens is right on! It is not a Grand Old Party, it is insulting to be ignored. The Elephant in the room is stomping all over us, and all of them do nothing. I am beginning to think I am the Party of NO, No Party! Maybe somebody should run under the Constitutional Party for Conservatives. I wonder what would have happened if Lee had run against Lincoln, he was asked to, you know or did you know that history?
