David (Davy) Crockett was elected a lieutenant colonel in the Lawrence County militia, served in the Tennessee General Assembly, twice represented Tennessee’s 12th District, which included Lawrence County, in Congress, and became a folk legend for his oratory skills and travels. He left Tennessee in 1835 after Martin Van Buren was elected president. Crockett was killed at the Battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836
