Lord Acton was a member of the British Parliament from 1859 to 1865 representing Carlow Borough and from 1865 to 1866 representing Bridgnorth. A well-known writer and historian, Acton is known for the saying, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.”
