(Feb. 23, 2025) — At 8:41 PM EST, President Donald Trump announced broadcaster, author, former Secret Service agent and former NYPD officer Dan Bongino as the next deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
In his post on TruthSocial, Trump indicated Bongino is newly-minted FBI Director Kash Patel’s choice for the position.
Patel was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Thursday and sworn in on Friday.
During the transition period between Joe Biden and Trump’s now-second term, Bongino was highly supportive of Patel’s nomination for FBI director.
In a broadcast several months ago, Bongino indicated he would be honored to serve or “help out” in the upcoming Trump administration if he were called upon to do so but at the time did not appear to believe he would come under serious consideration.
On his highly popular broadcast, Bongino has covered topics such as election interference and fraud; dysfunction at the FBI and the Secret Service, particularly following the July 13, 2024 assassination attempt on Trump; politics, current events and many others. Over the years he has been highly critical of the Democratic Party, including Barack Hussein Obama, for whom he provided special protective detail while Obama was in the White House.
Bongino unsuccessfully sought elected office on three occasions: twice while he resided in Maryland and the third after he relocated his family to Florida. After winning the 2014 Republican primary for the sixth congressional district, he came within several thousand votes of his general-election opponent, Democrat John Delaney.
