BILL IDENTICAL TO THE ONE THE PRESIDENT VETOED LAST MONTH

issued by House Armed Services Committee (HASC)

(Nov. 25, 2015) — WASHINGTON – Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-TX), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, made the following statement after the President signed the FY16 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) into law. The bill authorizes the pay and benefits our troops have earned and deserve; creates a new portable retirement system for uniformed military; begins reforming the Pentagon to restore agility; gives the President new tools to confront America’s enemies, while requiring him to submit a concrete strategy to defeat ISIL; and carries a bipartisan prohibition on the transfer of GTMO detainees to the United States. The bill is $5 billion less than the President initially requested and Congress originally authorized.

“The policies in the bill the President signed today are identical to the policies he vetoed on Oct. 22.  The only difference is this bill authorizes $5 billion less for our military.  Given recent events, we may all wish we had that $5 billion back to help protect the country.”
