DOCUMENTS DEMANDED PRIOR TO 5:00 P.M. MEETING

by Sharon Rondeau

Did Eric Holder and Darrell Issa meet on Tuesday evening?

(Jun. 19, 2012) — Several hours ago, it was reported that the U.S. Department of Justice “had the documents” which Rep. Darrell Issa had requested be delivered to him prior to a meeting between Attorney General Eric Holder and Issa crafted as a “compromise” before a scheduled vote on whether or not Holder should be deemed in contempt of Congress on Wednesday morning.

Issa and several other Republicans were to meet at 5:00 p.m. today with Holder and several Democrats to further discuss information which Holder has failed to release to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee since it was subpoenaed last October.

Issa had stipulated that certain documents must be delivered to his office for review prior to the 5:00 p.m. deadline, but Holder had indicated that he did not intend to release more information prior to that time.

The Post & Email received no response to calls and emails placed to the offices of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Speaker of the House John Boehner as to where they stand regarding a contempt vote on Holder.

In May of last year, Holder had testified to Congress that he was unaware of the “Fast & Furious” gunrunning program in which weapons ended up in the hands of criminals and drug cartel members.  Border Agent Brian Terry and ICE Agent Jaime Zapata were killed by firearms transferred from the U.S. to Mexican criminals.

Senator John Cornyn of Texas called for Holder’s resignation last week and was later joined by at least four other senators.  Holder responded that he had “no intention” of resigning.

Update, 6:02 p.m.:  Fox News is reporting that Issa and Holder met “in a remote room” on Capitol Hill.  Darrell Issa was on camera stating that the Justice Department was given until sometime tonight to produce documentation requested by Issa’s committee.
