“A SLIM CHANCE”

(Feb. 18, 2017) — As the curtain rises, Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” is played. The stage is set as a bleak outpost in the mountains of Afghanistan. The backdrop is of a faraway mountain range emphasizing the lonely outpost. It is night but there’s a full moon. The two actors are dressed in Army fatigues looking through binoculars as they walk around, checking their supplies and, as the music ends, sit on a couple of rocks, center stage, front.
“I don’t get it.”
“Look, none of us ‘gets it,’ okay? Now you’re happy, because if you’re happy then it must be alright with the world.”
“Gee, all I said is that I really don’t see the point of guarding this lousy pile of rocks at 2:00 a.m. in the morning.”
“That’s redundant.”
“What is?”
“You are. ‘2:00 a.m.’ is the morning, so you don’t have to say ‘in the morning.’”
“You mean the afternoon.”
“This ought to be good.”
“It will be. It’ll be worth the wait. Two negatives make a positive, right? Then ‘2:00 a.m. in the morning’ must be some sort of secret code for ‘2:00 in the afternoon,’ see?”
“I’ll tell you what I see: I see you living in the States when you get out, and when I get out I’ll be living in Hawaii.”
“All I asked was what’s the point of us being here, on this pile of rocks, loaded down with weapons and canteens of water; that’s all. So you can’t tell me, can you? How about the Major, do you think he knows? Does anyone in the Pentagon know? Do you think anyone in the whole Army knows?”
“No, of course not. You’re barking up the wrong tree. You should be asking State; they have all the answers. They’re supposed to be the smartest and brightest.”
“Oh, isn’t that reassuring: tell that to the Libyans, why don’t you? ‘You lost your country because our foreign policy pundits got it all wrong, again. Sorry.’
“Now you’re making sense.”
“Look around you. Everyone in this lousy pile of rocks hates our guts. Oh, they smile when you give them stuff, like money and food and weapons, but as soon as you turn your back they give you hand gestures that even a Seaman Recruit or a PFC would be able to decipher, word-for-word, if you know what I mean.”
“I know what you mean.”
“So how come State always gets it wrong? Does everyone in the government hate the Jews, is that it? And the CIA blindly follows, isn’t that right?”
“Look, let me explain it to you. You are at the very bottom in the hierarchy of life; why, look at you: first, you’re one step beyond expendable; second, you’re in Afghanistan, on the other side of the world where you were born; third, you volunteered to join up. And to top it off you’re trying to make some sort of sense of your life, which really takes the cake. The only sense at this time in your life is to keep your mouth shut and just follow orders.”
“That’s just fine. So I’m to act exactly like Nazis did in World War II: first, round up the members of the unions; second, gather all the gypsies and political adversaries; and, last but not least, herd the Jews into the gas chambers.
“These people don’t think like us; they have a completely different value system; why, they murder their wives and daughters (‘honor kill’) and get away with it. To them that’s just your everyday normal behavior. So they get on a plane and the next day they’re in St. Paul, Detroit, or East St. Louis, but they’re still the same; little kids playing Intifada: let’s kill the pigs and apes: the Jews and Great Satan. It’s not like they become Americanized overnight, you know. Only the idiots at DHS* believe that malarkey.”
“Look, kid, you’re right. I know you’re right and a bunch of others know you’re right, and that’s why we voted for Trump: so we at least have some sort of chance. There’d be NO chance with Hillary so we just got to make the best of a very bad situation. Can Trump save our Republic? Let’s at least try and think positive, okay? If he doesn’t do it, then our country and, with it, Western Civilization is toast, okay?
“Right now there’s a chance, a slim chance, but, nevertheless, a chance to save ourselves. And yes, importing the enemy is just plain stupid but, right now, the biggest threat to our democracy is coming from within, from the Schumers and McCains; from the Democrats and the RINOs; but most definitely from the dishonest news media. And here comes our reliefs.”
Curtain closes as the music of the Rolling Stone’s “Moonlight Mile” is played.
