“JUST AS A TRUE PATRIOT WOULD DO”

Dear Next President:

I early voted and I’m proud to say it was for you.

First of all, I’m a Vietnam Veteran and did my part, of which I’m proud, and there’s a few others out there who have me to thank for saving their lives, so you could say that I walked the walk and, therefore, earned the credentials to talk the talk.

And here’s ‘The Talk’:

Those who serve may not necessarily wear a uniform and attend ceremonies honoring their service. Each day, throughout America, acts of patriotism take place, unnoticed and unsung, and that’s how it should be. But there are exceptions to every rule, and this is one such case.

Just because a person may not have the credentials proving his patriotism does not mean, by any stretch of the imagination, that that person is not and cannot be as patriotic as any hero on the field of battle.

The love for one’s country is like no other. When one loves America, he does not love the Saguaro cactus in Arizona, although he can.

When one loves America, he’s not loving the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, of which he can be mightily proud: built by Americans for Americans, although he could.

When one loves America, one can love our Constitution (physical document), and that’s good, but it’s still blotches of ink on paper.

No, the love for America goes to the very soul of a Patriot. The star on a Hollywood sidewalk is not the soul of America, but it physically REPRESENTS the soul of America, the accomplishments of individuals who brought peace, harmony and happiness to our lives.

Recently your star on a sidewalk in Hollywood, California was vandalized, and one person stepped forward and stood tall to protect that one star of all the stars of all the sidewalks of all the world.

Her selfless act of courage for her heroic deed, for her bravery in defending the machine-gun nest against overwhelming odds of thousands of charging Chinese soldiers; for her steadfast belief that it was your star that needed defending: the flag must be raised on Mt. Suribachi for her belief that it is you and you alone who needed a guardian, for it rests with you, Mr. Trump, and you alone, to carry our country forward to build ‘The Wall’ and to ‘Clean out the swamp.’

This Patriot, who was beaten for defending a small slice of America, was our sentinel standing guard on the ramparts; who volunteered to do her duty in acting as the deterrent, no less powerful than a Patriot Missile battery which stood alone, against all odds, and took the blows that were meant for all Patriotic Americans.

I don’t know who the woman is who defended your star, which is, as it’s turning out, no less important than the American flag: a SYMBOL that we all admire so. That she deserves a Purple Heart is beyond question; that she deserves the honor and respect of every military person, either active or not, is also without question; and that she deserves the love and respect for her heroic deed, not done for recognition, fame or fortune, but silently, just as a true Patriot would do, just as any of us – I’d like to think – would have done if given half a chance, for she has earned – deserves — our undying gratitude.

Sincerely,

OPOVV
