ICE Releases Thousands, Not Hundreds, of Illegal Immigrants

(Mar. 1, 2013) — The AP is reporting that more than 2,000 illegal immigrants were released from jails in four states attributed to budget cuts from the sequester and that 3,000 more will be released later this month.

Approximately 1,000 illegals were released each week beginning in mid-February, although AP Alicia Caldwell reported that “The agency’s field offices have reported more than 2,000 immigrants released before intense criticism this week led to a temporary shutdown of the plan, according to the documents.”

As this story goes to press, Caldwell is giving an interview on Greta van Susteren’s show on Fox News, with Dana Perino guest-hosting for van Susteren.

The Department of Homeland Security had told the public that “several hundred” incarcerated illegals were to be released because of the sequester.  The White House had conceived of the sequester during the debt-ceiling negotiations of July 2011, presumably as a means by which to force Congress to produce a workable budget by the deadline of February 28, which it failed to do.

ICE Director Gary Mead has tendered his resignation effective at the end of April.

The Obama regime has refused to deport illegal aliens and is seeking an “overhaul” of immigration laws. Last year, Obama issued an executive order to allow young illegals who were brought to the U.S. as children to remain in the country in violation of federal law.  Congress took no action.

Article I, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution requires the president and commander-in-chief to “…he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:–“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Article II, Section 4 states:

The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.

The AP is also reporting that according to the White House, “Career officials at ICE” authorized the release of the illegal aliens.  ICE, which stands for Immigration Customs Enforcement, is a division of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which reports to the president.  A spokeswoman for ICE said that Mead’s departure is unrelated to the release of the illegal immigrants and accused the AP of inaccurate reporting on the matter.

The DHS website states that its “vital mission” is to “secure the nation from the many threats we face. This requires the dedication of more than 240,000 employees in jobs that range from aviation and border security to emergency response, from cybersecurity analyst to chemical facility inspector. Our duties are wide-ranging, but our goal is clear – keeping America safe.”

The effects of sequestration, about which Obama has been “warning” the public for several weeks, will not be felt immediately, and some people may not notice any changes.  Earlier on Friday, numerous commentators said that Obama had been untruthful about the real effects of the perceived budget cuts.

Obama also said on television that “a lot of people say I’m being reasonable” in regard to his frustration over Republicans’ refusal to raise taxes in order to prevent the sequester which Obama had himself approved.
