Malcolm X was born “Malcolm Little,” and after a troubled childhood, spent six years in federal prison for robbery and other crimes. He became a national spokesman for “The Black Muslims,” or the Nation of Islam, before breaking with them and forming his own secular black nationalist movement with a political emphasis.
